Xbox is Microsoft's world–renowned video game and entertainment brand with approximately 50 million active subscribers. Console hardware and UI, games, and mobile applications are created by incredibly talented, passionate, Emmy-winning teams.  Designing at Xbox was a humbling, exciting, and learning-packed experience. In my time at Xbox I contributed to the design of TV, mobile, as well as PC-based applications.

Project: OneGuide

In an effort to make XBOX an INPUT 1 device, there was a big push to integrate a TV experience into the gaming console.  This was accomplished by routing the signal through the Xbox One, and offering a custom interface to control your TV called the OneGuide.

The OneGuide experience was designed for 10-foot and mobile devices by the TV Team. As an interaction-designer responsible for the mobile experience of One Guide, I partnered with product owners, researchers, developers, as well as other interaction, visual, and motion designers to deliver this award-winning experience.

Without interrupting content consumption, OneGuide on SmartGlass must enhance the way people discover, control, and customize their TV viewing experience.

the process

In order to develop a deep understanding of our challenge, we…

  • Reviewed concepts by previous/related teams

  • Performed competitive analysis

  • Reviewed ethnographic studies done by our research partners

  • Interviewed business stakeholders to understand their goals

Armed with this knowledge, we were able to clearly articulate…

  • Our audience and their pain points

  • Experience outcomes / user stories

  • Goals and vision for the product

  • Design principles for the work ahead

Now it was time to explore design solutions. Days were filled with exploring…

  • Information architecture models

  • Interaction design alternatives

  • Information and content design

  • Navigation models

We created numerous prototypes through close collaboration with…

  • Motion designers

  • Visual designers

  • Code prototype experts

We tested those prototypes by working closely with our research and development partners to…

  • Validate the big ideas

  • Usability test specific interaction and information design decisions

  • Confirm feasibility

After a number of rapid iterations, the designs were ready to build. The final results were accomplished through…

  • Working side-by-side with the Agile development team

  • Delivering last-minute modifications based on technical and time limitations

The Outcome

The team's effort enabled the XBOX ONE to become an Input 1 device. Today, millions of people sit in front of their TV and say, "XBOX, watch TV", then whip out their phones and, without interrupting the primary viewing experience, browse the Xbox OneGuide mobile app for something good to watch. In 2015 the TV experience was awarded an Emmy

This year’s ceremony featured some especially great news for Xbox One: Microsoft will receive an Emmy Award for Television Enhancement Devices, thanks to the Xbox One’s industry-leading television-on-demand and media center capabilities.
